Blogging, Publications, IBlogExtension

Q: What is the difference between a publication and a weblog?
A: They are the same. We prefer the more generic name "Publication" because we expect that in the future not all targets are weblogs.

Q: What is IBlogExtension?
A: IBlogExtension is an informal standard (interface) for plugins (installable extensions). The main purpose of these types of plugins is to allow the main program to be able to post new items to a weblog.
IntraVnews supports plugins compatible with the IBlogExtension interface.

Q: How do I configure a plugin?
A: There are three basic steps:
1. Install the plugin
2. Configure the plugin
3. Configure the publication.
When all is successful, there will be a new menu under the intraVnews button in Outlook. In some cases, you may have to restart Outlook.

1. Installing Plugin software:
Some plugins have their own installer, and some default to the plugins folder in NewsGator. Make sure you know where the plugin dll is located.
Plugins located in \\Program Files\\intraVnews\\Plugins will be automatically recognized during startup.

2. Configure the plugin
You can configure the plugin via Options/Preferences on the tab Plugins. If no plugins are listed under Loaded Plugins, click the second tab: Plugin Locations. Here you can add additional folders where intraVnews should check for plugins.
Some plugins can be configured from here: in Loaded Plugins, select the plugin and click Configure.

3. Configure a publication
You can configure a publication via Options/Preferences on the tab Publications.
Here you basically make the assignment between an Outlook folder and a plugin.

Now, check the intraVnews button in Outlook. If everything was configured correctly, you should have a new button "Compose new post for ...".
You may have to restart Outlook before you can create a new post.

Q: Where do I find a plugin for my blog software?
A: We will compile a comprehensive list of plugins. For now, check google and query for IBlogExtension in combination with your blogging software.

General

On your features page, I read that intraVnews can download the entire content an RSS item links to. Why doesn't it work?
By default intraVnews downloads only the description of the items. To turn on 'full content', go to Tools | Options in Outlook. On the intraVnews tab, uncheck 'Download descriptions only'.
If you only want to receive full content for some feeds, check 'Download Descriptions Only, Next, select the feed(s) in My Subscriptions and on the tab 'Download Settings' check 'Download all content for offline reading'.

I want a German version of intraVnews
We will convert our string tables to languages other than English. We are evaluating at least 15 target languages.

I want items that I receive marked as Read by default
This is a standard feature and can be switched on in intraVnews' options page. Click the intraVnews tab in Outlook's options dialog.

How many feeds can I be subscribed to using intraVnews?
We have successfully tested intraVnews with 4789 feeds subscribed.

Is there a simple way to hide the balloon?
If you want to hide the balloon, click its "Don't show" link.
To re-enable the balloon, go to the Options menu in the My Subscriptions dialog and check the Balloon Active menu.

Does intraVnews contain Spy ware?
No. There is NO Spy ware installed, there are no nag-screens, no ads and no time limitations in the released version of our software. Beta versions may have an expiration date built in. IntraVnews is free to use for individuals. Corporate use requires a license.

Why does intraVnews use so much memory?
intraVnews relies on the memory management functionality of the Microsoft .Net Framework. The more memory you have in your PC, the more intraVnews will initially use. When other applications are started, the memory management features in the Framework will reclaim a much of the memory back, without impacting Outlook or intraVnews. The Task Manager is not a reliable way to tell how much intraVnews is actually using, since much of the memory reported is already disposed of, waiting to be reclaimed.
Memory use will increase for a short period when intraVnews is first started. After that, it should stabilize or decline.

I am not interested in items older than X days. Can I configure this in intraVnews?
Go to Outlook's Tools | Options page, on the intraVnews tab check the "Only download items published within the last X days" checkbox. Also be sure to set the number of days limit.

I prefer only to see the descriptions of the items instead of their whole content. Where do I change this?
Go to Outlook's Tools | Options page, on the intraVnews tab check the "Download descriptions only" checkbox. Running on systems with a slow Internet connection will benefit from this feature.

I installed intraVnews without any issues. Now if I go to Outlook, intraVnews does not appear to be started.
Exit Outlook completely before you start the installation. If you installed intraVnews with Outlook open, restart Outlook. IntraVnews will start. Also, check the Task Manager for any occurrences of Outlook in the list.

I'm running intraVnews behind a proxy, where do I configure this?
You should be able to configure intraVnews to work through any proxy server by going to Outlook's Tools | Options dialog. Click on the intraVnews tab, you will find a proxy settings button there.

For certain feeds I use a username and password is required, how can I read the feeds in intraVnews?
Go to the Add URL dialog by clicking the button on the “Subscribe to New Feeds” form. On the “Add feed manually” screen there is a “Security” tab. Check the “This is a secure feed” box and click OK.

When I start Outlook, intraVnews does not appear to be running.
Make sure you close Outlook completely (also check the Task Manager for any occurrences of Outlook in the Processes list) and than start Outlook. Only on the first Outlook window intraVnews is able to install the toolbar.

Scheduling / Updating

I want to check all my feeds now, I can't seem to find a way to do this!
The RSS feed decides the polling interval. If you want to check for new items anyway, go to the My Subscriptions dialog, select all the feeds, right-click and select Reset Schedule.

Would it be possible to set an expiry period on the items I receive?
Yes, intraVnews includes an advanced cleanup wizard more advanced than the one Outlook ships with. You will be able to clean up old items using criteria based on publication- or received date. Cleanup is scheduled in the background or on a set time.

We are connected via an ISA Firewall. Can I use intraVnews?
We are running the ISA firewall at our offices. We have had no problems whatsoever. If your firewall requires authentication you can configure this on intraVnews' options tab in Outlook's options dialog.

How do I know when a feed was last checked?
Go to the Subscriptions dialog and find the Last Checked column.

If I check the RSS feed manually by opening the XML file in my browser I see items not yet downloaded by intraVnews, how come?
The items are downloaded on the next update of the feed. IntraVnews only checks feeds when it's their time.

Some feeds are in error in the Subscriptions dialog. What is causing the error?
Click on the feed in the subscriptions dialog and click the "Feed Status" tab. The last error is displayed. Sometimes errors are just temporarily glitches with the feed. If you think the feed is not in error, reset the schedule by right clicking on the feed. When the feed is downloaded, the problem may be gone.

Some sites ban the users' IP if they download feeds too often. How can we avoid this?
In intraVnews this should never happen. IntraVnews will use the polling interval as defined in the RSS feed. If no interval is found, intraVnews checks the header received from the server for information about when a feed should be checked again. If no scheduling information can be found, intraVnews uses a default interval of 60 minutes. You can create a custom schedule for each feed in the "Download Settings" tab in the Subscriptions dialog.
There are situations where this behavior is unavoidable, for instance when there are many machines behind the same IP due to the use of a firewall/proxy, or when you are running intraVnews on more than one PC with the same feed(s) subscribed.

Does intraVnews download the feeds in a compressible format?
intraVnews supports GZip, this often brings the amount of bandwidth down to over 65%. intraVnews also downloads the HTML content in GZipped format, if the server serving that HTML supports it.

Microsoft Outlook Related

I can't seem to get the Outlook Rules Wizard to work with intraVnews
intraVnews posts items using a PostItem object in Outlook. Unfortunately, PostItems are not handled by the Rules Wizard in Outlook.

Not all content in the item is displayed correctly and I get image placeholders instead of the actual content.
Over time web pages change, ads disappear and other content is included. Click on the source link in the item to open the current page in your browser to see the current page. In Outlook 2003 previews with Images are turned of by default. Look at Outlooks documentation to enable images.

I like the default view intraVnews uses for displaying the feeds. However, I want to change the grouping functionality.
We installed an intraVnews view in Outlook. Change it to your likings by changing fields, sorting and grouping options, filters or colored formatting.

I am seeing duplicate news items in my Outlook feed folder. Is intraVnews downloading the same item twice?
intraVnews downloads only what has changed in de feed since the previous time the feed was downloaded. If a publisher is automatically generating RSS files, sometimes the order of items changes and older items temporarily reappear in a feed. IntraVnews will then download these feeds again because it has only a short memory.

Why can't I right click on feeds in the Post Item and select "Read in intraVnews"?
You can right-click on content in items in Outlook; unfortunately the context menu in Outlook cannot be customized so we cannot place a "Read in intraVnews" link on this menu.

Nothing happens when I click "Read in intraVnews" on Internet Explorers short-cut menu.
Make sure intraVnews is running.

How can I flag a post for follow up?
Only in Outlook 2003 you can flag items for follow up. Just right click the post and select Follow Up.

Can I rename the folders that intraVnews has created?
Using Outlook you can rename, delete and move the folders. You can also rename or move the default intraVnews base folder. Many customers create a separate Personal Folder file (.PST) and move the intraVnews base folder to that new PST file.

Does intraVnews attempt to access Outlook's personal address book?
Never.

Can I spread feeds over multiple PST files?
Yes. You can easily move feed folders to different PST files, allowing you to diversify feed data. To change the location of the feed use the "Change Location" option in the My Subscriptions dialog.

My feed has a TTL of 120, are you downloading my feed every 30 minutes?
No, we obey all feed properties like TTL, SkipHours, SkipDays, UpdateBase, UpdatePeriod, UpdateFrequency. In addition we use information obtained from the server, including Last-Modified and Etag.

Can I post comments to items that appear in intraVnews?
If the feed item shows a link to the comments page of the current item, yes.

Can I read Usenet newsgroups using intraVnews?
No. Usenet is not related to RSS.

Are you providing support for Enclosures any time soon?
Once this is available in a released specification we will support enclosures.

Blogger.com recently allows saving my web blog as an Atom feed. Does intraVnews support this format?
Yes, from intraVnews version 1.02 Atom is supported.

I want to sort on RSS version in the Subscriptions dialog.
There is a Version column in the Subscriptions dialog; however its width is set to zero. It's right after the Status column. Drag it wider and click on the Version column to sort on RSS version.

intraVnews reports my feed with "No RSS Channel(s) found", if I open the feed in my browser it opens correctly
Please verify the feed using Mark Pilgrims and Sam Ruby's Feed Validator at
.
Subscribing to Feeds

I want to be able to drag a XML feed from my browser to intraVnews
That's supported. Just drag the XML bitmap or a link to a valid OPML file and drop it on the feed list in the Subscriptions dialog in intraVnews. You can also right-click the XML feed and select "Read in intraVnews".

How can I unsubscribe from a feed?
There are a couple of ways to unsubscribe from feeds:
1. Probably the easiest one is just press delete on the feed in the Subscriptions list.
2. If you are in folder mode, delete the folder in Outlook. Next time intraVnews checks the feed, it will mark the subscription with "Folder Not Found" by default. You can change this behavior in Tools | Options to let intraVnews automatically unsubscribe from a feed when a folder is deleted.
3. Select multiple feeds in the Subscriptions dialog and right-click on Unsubscribe.

I want to get rid of feeds that are in error, what is the quickest way?
Go to the Subscriptions dialog and select "Unsubscribe" "All Feeds with Errors".

How do I import feeds that I have exported from other aggregators?
Open your Subscriptions dialog from the command bar in Outlook and click "Import OPML" from the "Subscriptions" menu. You can now point to a local OPML file or type/paste an URL pointing to an OPML file online. The categories defined in the OPML are preserved, for feeds without a category a default group name can be assigned. You can select all or a selection of feeds to be imported.
